What do you know about weatherizing?

Now that the temperatures are getting colder, it's time to find and seal those air leaks in your home.

What has your experience been with weatherizing? Have you come across good resources that you'd like to share with the cool crowd? Do you have products you'd recommend? Know of techniques that did or didn't work? We're curious to know your thoughts on the subject.

There's also more information and links on the ImCool.info site under the "Weatherize your doors and windows" action.

I was bummed when earlier this year I contacted PSE for a list of their approved contractors in B'ham set up to do energy saving installations (for the cash back bonus they offer) only to be told there were no approved contractors in bellingham! Hopefully that has changed...I am going to do it all anyway, but some encouragement would be nice! I guess I will ahve to get all my encouragement here :)

It's great to weatherize around your doors and windows, but you lose the most heat through the attic and below your house. So check to make sure both are insulated properly. Also make sure your hot water tank is insulated with a thermal blanket.
If you have forced-air heat, sealing all of the joints in your duct work (with mastic not duct tape) will stop your heated air from being blown into unheated spaces. It will also keep air from being sucked from the moldy, dusty, germ ridden spaces of your attic and crawl-space.
Stay warm and healthy this winter.
